Nhulunbuy Amateur Swimming Club aka BARRAS is a not-for-profit organisation. BARRAS is run by a committee that consist of parents of swimmers. The committee volunteer their time to make being part of the Nhulunbuy Amateur Swimming Club an enjoyable and fun experience for the children.
BARRAS supports stroke technique development, fitness and promotion of competitive swimmers. It is not a learn to swim club but a progression from Travelling Tadpole Swim School.
As with all recreational sports, parental help is essential in making the BARRAS swimming club successful. There are a number of ways you can show your support
• By coming along and helping out at the club nights – there are simple jobs for new comers such as being a timer (pressing stop when a swimmer touches the wall at the finish of a race) or organising the kids into the correct lanes (marshalling). BARRAS coaches and committee appreciates your efforts and support and it is a great way to meet other people in town.
• By helping the coaches on pool deck with simple tasks such as counting swimmers off the wall, taking times, supervising at the far end of the pool. This is a great pathway into coaching if you are interested.
• Helping at fundraising events such as BBQs and markets.
• Helping with general committee tasks; joining the committee.
Our primary focus is to provide the opportunity for each individual swimmer to reach their potential in the sport of competitive swimming and to have fun while doing it!
We focus on concepts such as teamwork, sportsmanship, goal setting, motivation, and dedication.
We are a stroke based program that believes in developing appropriate swimming techniques and skills at an early age.
The squad training sessions are designed to prepare the swimmer for club race meets held at regular intervals throughout the year.
During club meets all swimmers times are recorded and used as an incentive for achieving personal best (PB) times in future meets.
